Freshman Angela Wiebe recorded a career-high nine kills, hit .438 and added five blocks, while middle blocker Megan Zanto notched nine kills and four blocks as the Montana State volleyball team closed out the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic with a 30-17, 30-24, 30-25 win over Alabama.
“We’re proving that we can respond in a positive manner,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu, referring to the Bobcats’ 3-1 loss to #14 Kansas State on Friday night. “I was especially pleased with the play of Angela Wiebe. She showed a lot of heart and had an outstanding match.”
Montana State (4-2) broke open a 10-8 lead in the first game to build a 24-14 advantage on a Wiebe kill. The Bobcats won the opening stanza when Alabama’s Erin Heffner put the ball into the net.
In the second game, MSU battled back from a 16-10 deficit to take a 23-22 lead on a Meggie Malyurek kill. Montana State then outscored Alabama (1-5) 7-2 down the stretch, winning the game on another Crimson Tide miscue.
The final stanza featured 15 ties with Alabama owning its biggest margin at 21-18, before MSU responded with an 8-1 run to take a 26-22 lead. The Bobcats closed out the match on a Crimson Tide hitting error.
“We improved by leaps and bounds this weekend,” Malauulu said. “(The Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic) was a step up from last week’s competition and we did a nice job competing.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat victory was junior setter Kamber Kelly, who notched 27 assists and five digs. Kelly’s younger sister Kandice recorded a career and match-high 15 digs for MSU.
Alabama was paced in the loss by Heffner with 15 kills and 11 digs.
