No. 14 Kansas State Wins Cat-Fight

Give the Montana State volleyball team credit, they gave #14 Kansas State all they could handle before the Wildcats persevered with a 26-30, 30-22, 30-18, 30-28 victory Friday night in opening-round action of the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic.
“I thought our team played with a lot of heart,” said first-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We learned that if we play within the system we can compete with the best in the nation.
“However, our serve-receive game broke down in the middle of the match and Kansas State took advantage of the situation. I was pleased with the way we stayed tough in the fourth game.”
Montana State (2-2) rallied from a 16-14 deficit in the opening stanza and broke open an 18-all tie with four consecutive points to stake a 22-18 lead following a Nadine Goldi kill. Kansas State (4-2) pulled to within 27-26, before the Bobcats responded with three straight points, winning the game on a LeAnn Kinvig kill.
“We talked about getting off to a good start all week,” Malauulu said. “I thought our kids used the energy of the crowd very well.”
The announced attendance of 1,704 was the fifth best crowd in the history of Shroyer Gym.
Kansas State opened the second game with a 17-6 run; however, the Bobcats closed to within 24-19 on an Angela Wiebe kill. Despite outscoring the Wildcats 16-13 down the stretch, KSU won the game following a Meggie Malyurek hitting error.
In the third set, Kansas State surged to an 18-8 lead and held a ten-point margin for most of the game. The Wildcats ended the third stanza following a Malyurek ball-handling error.
In the final game, KSU again built a comfortable 23-17 advantage, before Montana State stormed back to tie the game at 26-all on a Megan Zanto kill. Kansas State then pushed the score to 29-27, before a Wiebe kill closed the margin to 29-28. However, a Kamber Kelly service attempt sailed long and KSU notched a 3-1 win.
The Bobcats were paced in the loss by Kinvig with a team-high 14 kills, while Malyurek added 12 kills and 11 digs. Defensively, MSU was paced by Kelly and Natalie Paredes with 14 digs apiece. Zanto also gave the Bobcats a boost with eight kills and a match-high six blocks. Kelly also added 38 assists, six kills and two aces.
“Our right-side was effective against their swing-block,” Malauulu said. “LeAnn (Kinvig) really did a nice job against one of the best teams in the nation.”
Kansas State was paced by first-team All-Big 12 performer Lauren Goehring with 22 kills, while setter Gabby Guerre added 50 assists and seven kills. KSU’s Laura Downey-Wallace led all players with 20 digs.
In the first game of the tournament, Utah State defeated Alabama 30-17, 30-26, 30-20.
Montana State will play Utah State at 10 a.m., Saturday morning, followed by Alabama at 7:30 p.m.
