Bobcats Fall to UNC

Montana State held Northern Colorado's explosive offense in tow for three quarters, but a pair of long fourth-quarter scoring drives gave the Bears a 14-10 victory on Saturday.
The Bears, trailing 10-0 entering the fourth quarter, capped a 92-yard drive with a 23-yard Vincent Jackson touchdown reception with 14:54 to left play to get on the board, then won the game with a two-yard Jamar Farbes touchdown catch with 2:17 to play. The Bobcats had only 266 yards of total offense, including 31 in the fourth quarter.
"It was another good effort by the defense," said MSU coach Mike Kramer. "I think frustration started to play into it a little bit with the two late hits, the personal foul, and the defensive pass interference. That all added up to 60 yards in penalties and some hellacious hidden yards. The defense burned itself down in the fourth quarter a little bit."
Frustration on offense negated MSU's solid defensive day. The Bobcats had 18 first downs, one away from the team's high water mark this season, but had only 266 yards, the low mark of the season. "We have to find playmakers," Kramer said of the offense's inability to take over the game. We're fighting our way through some horrendous youth."
The Bobcats appeared ready to take control of the game late in the third quarter. Leading 10-0, MSU faced a second-and-two from the Northern Colorado nine yard line. David Mayfield was stopped for no gain on second down, Ryan Elliott gained a yard on third down, and on fourth Mayfield was stopped for no going over the pile. "The whole game turned on that fourth down play," Kramer said.
Revitalized by the defensive stand, UNC marched 92 yards in nine plays and 3:42 to cut MSU's lead to 10-7. The Bobcats marched to the Bear 43-yard line on its ensuing possession, but punted to the Bears. Northern Colorado then marched 85 yards in 11 plays -- aided by a late hit on the quarterback that extended the drive on third down and a controversial pass interference call -- for the winning score.
UNC's sensational receiver Vincent Jackson caught eight passes for 123 yards and his 11th touchdown in the team's five games. Tony Christensen was 15-for-25 passing for 137 yards. Travis Lulay was 18-for-31 passing for 125 yards and one interception. The only turnover of the game came on Lulay's desperation pass on the game's final play.
MSU drops to 1-3 on the season. UNC is now 4-1.
