Weber State Spikers Down Bobcats in Five-Game Thriller

“I felt we weren’t in a good mindset from the start,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “It seemed like we were playing catch-up the entire match. We certainly didn’t have everyone on the same page.”
Montana State (10-4, 1-1) was paced in the loss by Nadine Goldi with 19 kills and 15 digs, while Meggie Malyurek chipped in 16 kills and 18 digs.
Weber State (4-8, 1-1) won just about every statistical category and out-hit the Bobcats .187 to .119. WSU also held a 78 to 64 kill advantage.
With the match tied at 2-all heading into the final stanza, the Wildcats quickly opened game five taking a 4-2 advantage. WSU held a two-point margin at 8-6, before the Bobcats answered with a 6-3 run to take a 12-11 lead on a block by Goldi and Megan Zanto. Following a Weber State timeout, the Wildcats rattled of a 3-0 run to take a 14-12 lead. A Goldi kill and a WSU miscue tied the game at 14-all. With the game tied at 15-all, Weber State finalized the victory on a Birch winner.
“We didn’t take care of the details and against a team that plays three seniors you can’t expect to win,” Malauulu said. “Weber State really mixed up what they had been doing on the court prior to this match, but that shouldn’t have had a big effect on us.
“It’s going to be an interesting Big Sky season,” Malauulu said. “Give Weber State some credit for stealing one on the road.”
Montana State will play at Sacramento State on Thursday night.
