Montana State Spikers Tame Bengals in Big Sky Opener

“We established our block at the beginning of the match and Idaho State’s outside hitters couldn’t get on track,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We played a very solid match, and when we had a few glitches, we kept our composure and regained the momentum.”
For the match, Montana State (10-3, 1-0) out-blocked the Bengals 12 to 5. The Bobcats were led at the net by Megan Zanto with a match-high nine block assists. Zanto, a sophomore from Helena, also added seven kills.
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack was Meggie Malyurek with a team-high nine kills. She also added nine digs and a block.
Montana State opened the match with a quick 12-5 start following a Kelly kill. MSU built the lead to 25-13 on a Malyurek kill and won the game on another Kelly winner.
In the second stanza, Idaho State (10-4, 0-1) got off to a quick 6-2 lead, before the Bobcats answered with a 7-3 run to tie the game at 9-all on a Malyurek kill. MSU then took a 17-13 advantage on a Kelly kill and held the margin until a Zanto kill put the ‘Cats up 2-0 heading into intermission.
“I was glad to see our response following our disappointing loss to Marquette last weekend,” Malauulu said. “We played as a team and it made all the difference in the world.”
In the final game, MSU rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take a 10-8 lead on a Zanto block. The Bobcats opened-up a 21-15 lead on another Zanto block. The Bengals made one final run and pulled to within 25-24, before MSU answered with a 5-4 run, winning the match following an ISU service error.
Idaho State was paced by Ali Gorny with 12 kills and 18 digs. However, the Bengals leading hitter was held to -.109 from the field.
Montana State will host Weber State on Saturday night.
