Bobcat Spikers Open Big Sky Season

The Montana State volleyball team will open its 2003 Big Sky season when they host Idaho State (10-3), Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., in Shroyer Gym. MSU is 26-21 all-time against the Bengals, including winning six of the last seven against ISU. Montana State is 8-7 in league openers since the inception of the Big Sky Conference in 1988. The Bobcats will conclude the weekend when they meet Weber State (3-7), Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will play at Montana, before making the trek to Bozeman.

REWRAPPING THE WEEK THAT WAS:
Despite a 3-1 setback to Marquette on Saturday night, the Bobcats still claimed the team title of the Wingate INNvitational. Montana State opened the tournament with a 30-19, 30-24, 30-25 win over Wyoming. Sophomore Meggie Malyurek paced the Bobcats with 12 kills and 13 digs, while hitting .417 (12-2-24) from the floor. On Saturday morning, the ‘Cats handed Gonzaga a 30-18, 30-23, 30-23 setback. Malyurek again paced the Bobcat hitters with 13 kills and ten digs, while hitting .440 (13-2-25) from the field. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 40 assists and added seven digs, while Nadine Göldi and Megan Zanto also reached double-figure kill totals with 13 and ten, respectively. At the net, freshman Angela Wiebe led MSU with a match-high four blocks. MSU dropped the tournament finale, losing a 30-24, 19-30, 30-21, 32-30 decision to Marquette. For the match, MSU hit a paltry .104 from the floor. Malyurek paced MSU with 15 kills and 14 digs.
BIG SKY CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Junior setter Kamber Kelly was named co Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for her efforts at the Wingate INNvitational, last weekend. The 5-foot-9 native of Roundup, averaged 11.1 assists, 3.20 digs, 1.60 kills and .90 blocks per game, while hitting .256 from the field. She had her best outing of the weekend in Montana State’s 3-0 victory over Wyoming. Against the Cowgirls, Kelly notched 33 assists and hit an impressive .636 from the floor on seven kills, no errors on 11 attempts. For the year, she is averaging 9.28 assists, 3.02 digs and 1.38 kills per game. In addition to her season highlights, Kelly is third on MSU’s all-time assists chart with 2,067 assists, which trails only Brooke Olsen (4,712) and Lorraine Morrison (2,293). Kelly shared the weekly award with Sacramento State’s Emily Wilson.
CROWD CRAZY:
Montana State set a new opening night attendance record when 1,704 fans jammed Shroyer Gym three weeks ago. Last weekend, MSU had a pair of 1,000-plus matches. After week four, Montana State is ranked 21st in the nation in attendance at 1,050 per match.
