THE STORYLINE
The Bobcats will attempt to bounce back on Saturday, hosting ancient conference-mate Northern Colorado for MSU Wendy’s Hall of Fame weekend and Radio Network Affiliates Day. The Bears, like MSU a former member of the Rocky Mountain Conference, is a newly-minted I-AA school. Thus far, UNC has made a smooth transition, standing 3-1 on the young season with a near-miss loss to Big Sky member Idaho State. UNC is led by a stingy defense and the spectacular play of star receiver Vincent Jackson, who has 10 touchdowns in four games.

NOTING THE ‘CATS
What to Watch
* Bouncing Back... The Bobcats have been asked to do a lot of that this year, and this week will be no exception. Montana State will need to re-focus its energy against a team making a fairly smooth transition to Division I-AA.
* Growing Pains... The Bobcats rely on a lot of young players at the offensive skill positions this year, and some growing pains are evident through three games. The team suffered five turnovers in the season opener at Wyoming, and after a solid performance in a home win over Gardner-Webb struggled with only 272 yards against Cal Poly. Five projected starters in Saturday’s game are redshirt freshmen or true sophomores, including the starting quarterback, a starting reciever, and the starting running back.
* Option Be Gone... Saturday’s game against Northern Colorado will mark Montana State’s first since the season opener against what Bobcat fans would consider “normal” offensive and defensive schemes. After playing spread and option offenses and flex defenses in the last two games, the Bobcats face a Big Sky-type team in terms of scheme this week.
Out of the Gates
Montana State is 1-2 for the third time in Mike Kramer’s four seasons. That snaps a string of eight straight seasons in which the Bobcats started at least 2-1. The difference, it appears, may come out in the back end of the schedule. Between 1990 and ‘99, the Bobcats were 6-20 in the month of November without a single winning month. Mike Kramer’s teams are 5-6 in November, and last year’s 4-1 ride tothe Big Sky title was the school’s first winning November since 1984.
Home Sweet Home
Montana State will look to extend a modest run of home success this weekend when it hosts explosive Northern Colorado. The Bobcats have won four straight home games and six of the last seven in Bobcat Stadium.
Down the Rockies
Montana State is 36-28-8 all-time against schools from Colorado.
C-Note
Saturday’s loss marked the first time this season a Bobcat hadn’t rushed for 100 yards.
C-Note, Part II
David Mayfield rushed for 101 yards against Wyoming, and Bruce Molock gained 120 against Gardner-Webb. That gave the Bobcats different back-to-back 100-yarders for the first time since 1993.
Battling the Bears
Saturday’s game against UNC marks Montana State’s second of three this season against former Rocky Mountain Conference rivals. From the beginning of the series in 1923 until the most recent meeting in 1956, UNC and MSU were league rivals.
Bye Week Blues
The Bobcats have enjoyed 21 in-season open weeks since World War II, and are now 10-11 . The Bobcats are 0-3 after byes under Mike Kramer, though, and have lost five of their last seven games played after a bye.
Deja Vu
Montana State’s loss at Cal Poly on Saturday was similar in many ways to the Bobcats’ last trip to California’s central coast. In the 40-37 loss at Cal Poly in 1999, the Bobcats also fell behind early, rallied in the fourth quarter, and recovered an on-side kick in the last two minutes of the game to set up a touchdown. In both games, that score after the on-side kick drew the Bobcats within three points, but the offense couldn’t get on the field again.
Debuts
One of the positive aspects of Saturday’s loss at Cal Poly was the integration of several first-time players into the lineup. Jeff Bolton made his season debut at right guard, and played very well. Jimmy Beal made his Bobcat debut at running back, gaining 17 yards on nine carries, but scoring on a six-yard run. Receivers Kellen Alley and Mike Williams also played for the first times in their careers, with neither recording stats.
D’ing Up
Montana State’s defense has made a pretty strong statement through the season’s early going. Against two nationally-ranked I-AA squads and a Division I-A opponent, Montana State is...
* 1st in the Big Sky and 12th in I-AA in total defense, 248.3
* 2nd in the Big Sky and 11th nationally in rushing defense, 78.3
* 3rd in the Big Sky in pass defense, 170.0
* 3rd in the Big Sky and 25th nationally in scoring defense, 16.0
D’ing Up, Part II
Montana State is the only team in Montana’s last 139 games, dating back to a Grizzly loss to Weber State in ‘92, to hold UM to just seven points.
Hip! Hip! Lulay!!
With each game, Bobcat quarterback Travis Lulay establishes himself not only as one of the top quarterbacks in Division I-AA, but as one of the premiere signal callers in school history. After just 11 games as MSU’s starter, Lulay is already 10th in school history in passing yards, 8th in touchdown passes, and 10th in completions. He is the first true freshman to lead the ‘Cats to a win in over Montana since Dave Alt in 1956.
In Lulay’s Way
Wyoming’s defense did something no opponent had previously done to MSU quarterback Travis Lulay in the Cowboys’ 21-10 win in the season opener. UW picked off four Lulay passes, becoming the only team to intercept Lulay more than once. Lulay threw only three picks last year. Lulay hasn’t been picked off since that season-opening loss.
Bouncing Back
Travis Lulay threw four interceptions in the season opener at Wyoming, but in the two games since then has not been picked off. Against Wyoming he was 18-for-39 passing, but in the two games since he is 26-for-50.
The 100-Yard Club
Bruce Molock became the 39th Bobcat to rush for 100 yards in a game since such statistics became available in 1964 by getting 120 last time out.
The Home Fires
The ‘Cats are 17-14 in Bobcat Stadium in its current configuration, 9-10 in Big Sky games, and 1-2 against Division II foes.
Good-Hands Guy
Bobcat tight end Blake Wolf has caught four passes this year. That matches his total as a sophomore last year, and is two away from equalling his career total prior to this, his junior season.

KRAMER’S QUOTES
On the Cal Poly game: “Defensively we gave a magnificent effort. Jon Montoya, Adam Cordeiro, Ray Sebestyen, Beau Clark were incomparable. Mac Mollohan in his first extended service was outstanding. Jonathan Molock had a tremendous day. Roger Cooper is peerless, above and beyond. We faltered on one play, before the end of the half when we ran around blocks instead of fighting through to make tackles. Otherwise, it was an outstanding day. The offensive line played well enough to win. Brent Swaggert and Mataio Toilolo continued to be impressive. Jeff (Bolton) played very well in his first outing of the year, Zach (Wolf) and Joe (Hirst) didn’t play as well as they had in the first two games, but they still played pretty darn well. The problem is our skill group on offense, from quarterback through receivers and running backs, is just not there yet. We’re young, dreadfully young in places, and that youth caught up to us against a pretty sophisticated defense. I hope to see growth this week. We need the players that handle the ball a lot for us to learn at a more rapid pace. Cal Poly’s offense is option, which we don’t like, yet we played well enough defensively beat a good option team. The onus now is on our offense to make plays, not just to run and block, but to make big-yardage plays, to chew up the clock and gain momentum. I look for an increased amount of playing time for Jimmy Beal and for tremendous improvement from our receiving corps in helping Travis out, to make big plays, and to make yards after the catch.”
On Cal Poly: “They have a receiver, Vincent Jackson, who is a man-mountain. He really has our attention. He easily is the most dynamic player we’ve played against this year, and we are mightily concerned on defense. Defensively they are pretty big, pretty mobile. They’re a very, very good team. It was 21-21 against Idaho State and the issue was very much in doubt when Idaho State was able to extend a little in the second half. At 3-1, Northern Colorado knows how to win. This will be a great test for us.”
On areas for improvement: “In our two losses we have suffered mightily on our punt coverage team, whether it be in protection or coverage. We simply can not fear one element of our kicking game. Nate has to boom the ball better, we have to do a better job of coverage, and we have to do a better job of gang tackling. Our kickoff return team does a pretty nice job, but we had some bad communication once last week. And, we need our punt return game to come back to us.”
