Despite Loss, 'Cats Claim Wingate INNvitational Title

Despite the loss, Montana State (9-3) garnered the team title of the tournament based on victories. MSU finished the tournament with seven wins, while Wyoming tallied six victories.
“We’re a good team when we play together,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We didn’t get a good team effort against Marquette. This will be a learning situation. We have to understand that you can’t take any team lightly.”
Marquette (3-9) got on track from the start, building a 19-9 lead in the opening stanza. MSU battled back to close the gap to 24-23, but the Golden Eagles shut the door with a 6-1 run, winning on a Theresa Coughlin kill.
The second game belonged to the Bobcats, as Montana State took a 21-12 lead on a Meggie Malyurek kill. MSU held the margin and won the game following a Marquette service error.
Marquette opened the third game on a 6-1 run and built the advantage to 17-13, before MSU countered to close to within 19-17 following a Nadine Goldi kill. The Golden Eagles went on an 11-4 run down the stretch, winning on a service ace.
In the final game, Montana State opened up a 17-12 lead on a Kamber Kelly ace and built the margin to 28-21 on another Kelly winner. However, the Golden Eagles responded and closed the gap to 28-25. A block by Malyurek and Megan Zanto gave the ‘Cats a 29-25 lead. Marquette then fought off five game points to tie the score at 30-all. MU then notched the final two points for the victory.
“We always seemed to be a step behind or moving in slow motion,” Malauulu said. “I thought we played very well against Wyoming and Gonzaga, but (tonight) we didn’t take care of the details and Marquette took advantage of us not playing well.”
The Bobcats were paced in the loss by Malyurek with 15 kills and 16 digs, while Nadine Goldi chipped in 14 kills and 13 digs. Setter Kamber Kelly recorded 38 assists and 16 digs. Defensively, MSU was led by Zanto with a match-high nine blocks.
Marquette was led in the win by Coughlin with 17 kills and 11 digs.
For her efforts, Kamber Kelly was named tournament most valuable player, while Malyurek also earned all-tournament accolades. Also named to the all-tournament team were Michele Rauter and Amanda Miller of Wyoming, Gemma Greer of Marquette and Abby Cullen of Gonzaga.
MSU will open its 2003 Big Sky Conference slate when they host Idaho State on Thursday night.
