Malyurek and Kelly Pace Montana State Spikers Past Cowgirls

“I was very encouraged with our start,” said MSU first-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “It’s been a couple of weeks since we came out competing from the opening serve.”
Malyurek, a 6-foot outside hitter from Big Horn, Wyo., tallied six kills in the opening game to pace the Bobcats. Montana State (8-2) built a 20-13 margin in the opening set on a Megan Zanto block. MSU finished the game on a Kelly kill off a Malyurek dig.
In the second frame, Wyoming (7-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage, before the ‘Cats answered with four consecutive points. With the score tied at 9-all, Montana State rattled off a 7-2 run to stake a 16-11 advantage. The Cowgirls closed the gap to 18-17; however, MSU went ahead 27-20 following a Zanto kill to secure the win. The Bobcats closed out the game on a LeAnn Kinvig tip.
In the final stanza, Montana State built an 18-11 lead on a block by freshman Angela Wiebe. Wyoming answered and closed the margin to 25-24 late in the game, before the Bobcats outscored the Cowgirls 5-1 down the stretch, winning the match on a Zanto and Nadine Goldi block.
“We were composed and consistent throughout the entire match,” Malauulu said. “It’s nice to see that carry over from last weekend’s tournament in Michigan. We didn’t get rattled by Wyoming’s scoring runs and we just played the game.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat victory was Zanto, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Helena, who tallied eight kills and a match-high eight blocks.
Wyoming was paced in the loss by Michele Rauter with 11 kills and 12 digs.
In the opening match of the Wingate INNvitational, Gonzaga downed Marquette 3-1.
Montana State will play Gonzaga at noon and Marquette at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday.
