Bobcat Harriers Open Season Saturday

Montana State men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their 2003 season when they host the MSU Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 20 at Bridger Creek Golf Course. The invitational will begin with the men’s five-mile race at 9 a.m., followed by the women’s three-mile event at 9:45 a.m.
Competing in the NCAA Division I races will be MSU, Idaho State, Utah Valley State and the University of Montana “B” team. Racing in the lower division will be MSU-Billings, Westminster and Flathead Valley.
The Montana State men’s team, which was ranked 30th in this week’s NCAA Division I poll, will look to upperclassmen Kevin Clary and Jonathan Gibson on Saturday. Also looking to make an impact for the Bobcats will be Josh Ricardi and Tony Bachmann.
“We’re the last Big Sky team to begin racing and that’s something we’ll need to overcome on Saturday,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “Idaho State and Montana both have a couple of races under their belts and their kids have already gained some valuable experience.
“We’re also a little tired as this is the toughest period for us in terms of training,” Kennedy added. “However, baring any injuries, I think we’ll be a very competitive team this season.”
The Montana State women’s team will be paced this season by Ariana Lee and Mayra Morgado. Lee holds one of the top ten fastest times on the Bridger Creek Course and was a NCAA Championship qualifier last season. Morgado, a transfer from Spokane Community College, has also made huge strides in the preseason.
“Ariana (Lee) and Mayra (Morgado) are running like seasoned veterans,” Kennedy said. “It will be really interesting to see how the rest of the team lines up on Saturday.
MSU will be without the services of letterwinner Brooke Cantu, who is sidelined due to eligibility issues. However, the transfer from Flathead Valley will compete in an unattached capacity.
