Montana State freshman redshirt Kim Stonehouse came off the bench to record a career-high 13 kills to pace the Bobcat volleyball team to a 20-30, 30-18, 30-24, 30-18 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay, Saturday morning at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
For the second consecutive match, the Bobcats fell behind early in the opening game. Wisconsin-Green Bay surged to an 8-1 advantage and built the margin to 24-13, before closing out the game on a 3-1 run.
“We had no sense of urgency in the opening game,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “It was a repeat of Friday night’s game. We’re certainly going to have to take a look at how we’re preparing to begin a match.”
Montana State (6-2) responded in game two as Stonehouse, a 6-foot outside hitter from Medicine Hat, Alberta, notched three kills and a block as the ‘Cats forged a 14-6 lead. MSU held the cushion throughout the game winning on a Phoenix hitting error.
In game three, the Bobcats again got off to a quick 6-1, before Wisconsin-Green Bay (6-2) answered back to close the margin to 21-19, before a pair of kills from Stonehouse lifted MSU to a 27-23 advantage. A UWGB hitting error gave MSU the third set victory
In the final game, Wisconsin-Green Bay held a 15-13 advantage before the Bobcats rattled off an 11-0 run behind the strong serving of freshman Nadine Goldi. MSU closed out the match on a Meggie Malyurek ace.
“Once again we responded well to a little adversity,” Malauulu said. “Our blocking got better and our serve-receive was solid, and it was the first time all year that we’ve out-dug our opponents.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack was Malyurek with 13 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Megan Zanto was also in double-digits with 11 kills and six blocks. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 42 assists and had a team-high 19 digs.
MSU will conclude tournament play against Eastern Michigan, Saturday night.
