Bobcats Spikers Clip Eagles for Eastern Michigan Title

After being the bridesmaid the last two tournaments, the Montana State volleyball team finally tied the knot posting a 21-30, 30-19, 30-22, 30-24 victory over host Eastern Michigan University, Saturday night in EMU’s Convocation Center.
Montana State (7-2), who has won five straight matches, was led by Megan Zanto. Zanto, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Helena, finished the match with 13 kills and eight digs to garner tourney MVP honors. Also contributing to the MSU effort were Meggie Malyurek and Kamber Kelly with 14 and ten kills, respectively.
Kelly finished the match with a triple double, adding 40 assists and ten digs.
For the third consecutive match, the Bobcats started slowly as Eastern Michigan (7-1) built a 20-7 lead. MSU closed to within 26-21 on a Kim Stonehouse kill; however, the Eagles closed out the game on a MSU miscue at the net.
“We got down early, but we kept our composure and fought our way back,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “We gained some momentum in the last half of the first game, and that carried over into the final three games.”
In the second stanza, EMU built a 4-1 lead before the Bobcats battled back to take a comfortable 20-15 advantage on a Zanto kill. MSU closed out the game on a 10-4 run winning on a Stonehouse kill.
Setter Kamber Kelly paced the Bobcats in the third game with two kills, two aces and two blocks as MSU grabbed a 22-13 advantage following a Zanto kill. EMU closed to within 25-21 before the ‘Cats went on a 5-1 run to win on a LeAnn Kinvig ace.
In the final stanza, MSU broke away from a 24-23 margin, and outscored the Eagles 6-1 down the stretch behind two kills and a block from Malyurek. The Bobcats won the match following an Eastern Michigan hitting error.
“I think we found ourselves this weekend,” Malauulu said. “We only had nine kids on the trip and every one of them made a significant contribution. We were a very mature team (tonight).”
For their efforts, Malyurek and Stonehouse also made the all-tournament team.
Eastern Michigan, who entered the match undefeated, was led in the loss by Emily Busch with 14 kills and five digs.
Montana State will host the Wingate INNvitational next weekend in Shroyer Gym. The tournament will feature Wyoming, Marquette and Gonzaga.
