Montana State Spikers Tame Westerwinds

Sophomore middle blocker Megan Zanto knocked down nine kills and hit .450 from the floor to pace the Bobcats to a 30-23, 30-26, 30-19 win over Western Illinois, Friday afternoon at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
“We got the win, but it isn’t the type of volleyball we should be playing,” said first-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We were standing still and not communicating. There comes a point when we must establish the level of play and compete. We weren’t very good this afternoon.”
Montana State (5-2) jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead and built the margin to 13-7, before outside hitter Meggie Malyurek went down with an ankle injury. Western Illinois (0-8) cut the lead to 16-12, before the Bobcats regrouped to win the opening stanza 30-23.
In the second game, WIU stormed to an early 5-1 lead before the Bobcats tied the game at 7-all following a Kamber Kelly kill. The Leathernecks held an 11-10 advantage, before two Kim Stonehouse kills gave the ‘Cats the lead for good.
“Kim (Stonehouse) came in made a contribution,” Malauulu said. “She was a little nervous at first, but once she got into a rhythm she did a very nice job.”
Also contributing the Montana State victory was freshman Angela Wiebe, who connected for eight kills, while hitting .350 from the floor. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 35 assists and added a team-high 15 digs.
Malyurek, who excited the game with an ankle sprain, is probable for Saturday’s matches, when the Bobcats take on Wisconsin-Green Bay and Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
