Bobcat Spikers Travel to Eastern Michigan Invitational

The Montana State volleyball team will take its second trip of the 2003 season this weekend as they travel to Ypsilanti, Michigan, Sept. 12-13 for the Eastern Michigan Invitational. MSU will open play on Friday against Western Illinois at 3 p.m. (MST). The Bobcats will conclude play on Saturday when they face Wisconsin-Green Bay at 8 a.m., followed by Eastern Michigan at 5:30 p.m. All matches will be played in EMU’s Convocation Center.

A CLASSIC FINISH:
For the second straight weekend, the Bobcat volleyball team finished second in a four-team tournament. Last weekend, MSU went 2-1 overall with victories over Utah State and Alabama. Their only blemish of the weekend was a 3-1 setback to #14 (now #12 Kansas State). Montana State opened the 9th Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic against K-State. The Wildcats hung-on for a 26-30, 30-22, 30-18, 30-28 in front of an opening-day record crowd of 1,704 in Shroyer Gym. MSU was paced in the loss by LeAnn Kinvig and Meggie Malyurek, who notched 14 and 12 kills, respectively. On Saturday, the Bobcats notched a hard-fought 30-23, 30-19, 22-30, 28-30, 19-17 victory over previously undefeated Utah State. Freshman Nadine Göldi recorded a season-high 19 kills, while Malyurek tallied 17 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Megan Zanto ended the match with 12 kills, a .550 hitting percentage and eight blocks. The ‘Cats ended the Holiday Inn Classic with a 30-17, 30-24, 30-25 straight set win over Alabama. Against the Crimson Tide, Montana State was paced by Zanto and freshman Angela Wiebe with nine kills each. Wiebe, a freshman from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, hit .438 from the field and added five blocks. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out 27 assists in the victory.
MONTANA STATE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Sophomore Megan Zanto was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts at the Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Helena, averaged 2.42 kills and 1.50 blocks, while hitting .291 from the floor, en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Zanto played a major role in MSU’s win over previously unbeaten Utah State by recording 12 kills, a .550 hitting percentage and a match-high eight blocks.
CROWD CRAZY:
Montana State set a new opening night attendance record when 1,704 fans jammed Shroyer Gym on Friday night as the ‘Cats met #14 Kansas State. The attendance was also the fifth largest in MSU history. After week one, Montana State is ranked 12th in the nation in attendance at 1,111.
