BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Mike Kramer will get his first look at his Bobcat football team in a live situation on Saturday, and he’s looking forward to it.
“It’s been a good week of practice to this point,” Kramer said after Thursday’s practice. “We’re having fun and enjoying the process, and that’s what camp is about during the first week.”
Kramer said the aura and attitude emanated by this year’s squad has been impressive. “This is a veteran, experienced team with tremendous savvy,” he said. “They know how to practice and how to be productive, and they are accomplishing that. There is good competition at a lot of positions, and that is elevating the level of play.”
Saturday’s scrimmage will be a very limited affair, featuring only around 30 plays. It will be held during the team’s regularly scheduled practice session on the MSU practice fields. In contrast to some years, when fall camp’s first scrimmage is a tone-setter, Kramer said he will be looking for several specific elements.
“I hope that Saturday is a continuation of the excellent practices we’ve had so far in the week,” Kramer said. “I want to see how our young defensive backs like Robert Maddox and DeAngelo Wall respond, I want to see Jason Gathing and the young linebackers make plays,” Kramer said. “I want to see how we respond in the running game, because that will be a reoccurring theme. I’m looking forward to watching Travis Lulay operate against a very veteran, talented defense. We won’t turn it loose on Saturday, but I want to see intensity.”
Kramer said the Bobcat offensive line has been solid during the first week of camp, much of it due to the misery the team experienced in that area last spring. “(Tackle) Dusty Daws and (center) Zach Wolf are really having solid camps,” Kramer said. “It appears that they have really benefitted from all the reps they took in the spring. Their continued emergence really gives us the kind of quality depth that we haven’t had at that position in years.”
