Ask Mike Kramer about the progress of the new quarterbacks in MSU’s camp, and he can’t help but smile. “Good,” he says after a moment. “Really good.” True freshmen Cory Carpenter and Rick Coppack have each impressed MSU coaches.
“Both those guys have a real good grasp of playing the position,” Kramer said. “They each have a good arm, a quick release, and good sensibility.” Redshirt freshman Brent Owens has also impressed. “Brent has thrown the ball well, and he’s moving better,” said offensive coordinator Don Bailey, who indicated that Owens played last year on a bum knee. “He had that knee scoped last winter, and he looks much better.” Kramer is pleased to have multiple quarterbacks. “We have a stable of quarterbacks, and each of them are quality. That is the situation we’ve been building to.”
* * * GATEWOOD GOOD TO GO * * *
Receiver Ricky Gatewood, who entered the camp under team suspension, has been activated. He practiced on Wednesday, but Bobcat coach Mike Kramer indicated that Gatewood is a redshirt candidate. “Even though Ricky’s a junior college transfer, he’s very young as a receiver because he played quarterback his first year at Contra Costa,” Kramer said. “We think Ricky can be a spectacular receiver, but we’re strong at his position to the point where, if he’s going to be a backup, it would benefit us to redshirt him and bring him back with another year of experience under his belt.”
* * * INJURY UPDATE * * *
The Bobcats have begun dealing with the kind of injuries that begin creeping up early in camp. Safety Demond Goins (shoulder) is out two to three days, linebacker Jonathan Molock (leg) is day-to-day, defensive linemen Chad Gluhm (hamstring) and Beau Clark (bone bruise) are day-to-day, receiver Brandon Roosevelt (leg) is out indefinitely, and offensive tackle Garin Brewton (knee), is out for a couple of days. The most disappointing injury news concerns projected starting center Nic Stevenson. The junior from Baker, who had off-season shoulder surgery and missed spring drills, is out indefinitely after reaggravating his shoulder. “Last year, the injury to Nic would have been devestating,” Kramer said. “This year it’s a concern, but our depth allows us to overcome those kinds of situations.”
