Megan Zanto tallied a team-high 13 kills, while Nadine Goldi added ten as the Montana State volleyball squad concluded play at the Quality Inn Tiger Invitational with a 30-21, 30-24, 21-30, 30-27 victory over Toledo, Saturday night. MSU finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record.
“We had a good first tournament,” said MSU first-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “I’m very pleased with the way we responded following our loss to Missouri.
“We have a very young squad and they did a nice job of fighting through some rough spots to get a couple of wins.”
Montana State opened the match taking a 16-12 advantage on a LeAnn Kinvig kill. Montana State built a 26-18 margin following a block by Meggie Malyurek and Angela Wiebe. MSU closed out the game on a Kinvig kill.
In the second stanza, MSU used a 6-0 run to take a 13-7 advantage and built the margin to 25-15 on a Kinvig ace. The Bobcats closed out the set on a Toledo hitting miscue.
“I thought we did a solid job in the first two games,” Malauulu said. “We passed well and did a nice job blocking. We knew they would come out fighting in the third game, and they did; however, we didn’t respond very well.
“But give the kids credit, the pushed through a close fourth game to get the win.”
In the third game, Toledo (0-3) took a 20-15 lead, before MSU answered to close the gap to 20-18. The Rockets then went on a 10-3 run to secure the win. In the final set, Toledo took a 9-4 advantage, before the ‘Cats came back to tie the score at 17-all.
MSU then built a 25-19 lead on a pair of Zanto kills and an ace by Goldi. However, the Rockets remained resilient and tied the score at 25-all. The ‘Cats answered with a kill from Malyurek; a Toledo service error; and a block by Kinvig and Wiebe to take a 29-26 lead. MSU won the match on a Rocket service error.
Setter Kamber Kelly also played a big role in the Montana State victory. The junior from Roundup ended the match with 38 assists, eight digs and six assists. Defensively, the ‘Cats were paced by Natalie Paredes with 16 digs and Zanto with a match-high seven blocks.
Toledo was led in the loss by Corrie Magnus with 17 kills.
MSU will host its annual Mizuno-Holiday Inn Classic next weekend in Shroyer Gym. Competing will be Alabama, Kansas State and Utah State.
