Montana State’s Miya Malauulu picked up her first career victory as head coach of the Bobcat volleyball program as the ‘Cats held on for a 30-19, 15-30, 30-25, 25-30, 15-7 win over the University of Arkansas on Saturday morning. MSU is playing in the Missouri-Quality Inn Tiger Invitational.
“We had a good response, after a very humbling defeat last night,” Malauulu said. “We came ready to play and our outside hitters did a much better job passing the ball.”
Montana State (1-1) opened the match staking a 10-1 lead following a Meggie Malyurek kill. MSU built the margin to 20-9 on a Nadine Goldi ace and closed out the game on another Malyurek kill. In the second stanza, it was all Arkansas (1-1) as the Lady Razorbacks stormed out to a 14-0 advantage and cruised to the victory.
In the third game, Goldi and Malyurek combined for seven kills as the Bobcats hit a red-hot .429 from the floor. With MSU leading 25-24, a Megan Zanto ace, and a Malyurek kill gave the Bobcats the cushion it needed to win the game. Freshman Angela Wiebe notched the final kill to give MSU a 2-1 margin.
“I was very pleased with the way we came out after the intermission,” Malauulu said. “We didn’t show up at the beginning of the second game, but the kids stuck with the program and did a nice job finishing out the third game.”
The fourth set featured 17 ties. With the score knotted at 25-all, the Lady Razorbacks rattled off five consecutive points to win the game and force a fifth set.
In the final game, the Bobcats jumped out to an 8-2 advantage behind three kills from Malyurek and two from setter Kamber Kelly. The ‘Cats built the lead to 12-4 following a Wiebe solo block, and won the match on a Wiebe kill.
MSU was paced in the victory by Malyurek with a team-high 16 kills. Also in double-digits for the Bobcats were Goldi 12 and Zanto 11. Kelly, who had an outstanding match for MSU, finished with nine kills, 46 assists and four digs. Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Natalie Paredes and Goldi with 16 digs, apiece.
“Our setter did a nice job of bettering the ball,” Malauulu said. “She is becoming a little more offensive minded and that really paid dividends.
“With the injury to Kandice Kelly (hamstring/groin), Natalie Paredes came in and did an outstanding job. All-in-all, it was a good team effort.”
Arkansas was paced in the loss by Sara Kincaid with 25 kills and ten digs. The 6-foot-5 senior also added a match-high nine blocks for the Lady ‘Backs.
MSU will conclude tournament play against Toledo, Saturday night.
