“After two good weeks of practice it’s time for us to give the athletes a match-type setting,” said first-year Bobcat head coach Miya Malauulu. “We will play three 30-point games and will switch around our line-ups. It will give our kids a competitive environment as we close in our last week of preseason drills.”
The Bobcats, who posted a 21-10 record last season, return four starters and five letterwinners. In addition, Malauulu welcomes seven freshmen to the court this fall, as well. Leading the Bobcat contingent will be junior setter Kamber Kelly. The native of Roundup will also receive support from returning starters Megan Zanto, LeAnn Kinvig and Meggie Malyurek, along with back-up setter Natalie Paredes.
“We have a great nucleus of experienced players and they’ve done a nice job of incorporating the newcomers into the mix,” Malauulu said. “It is extremely important that we establish strong communication on the court.
“We have some work to do, but it’s also been exciting to watch our growth over the past two weeks.”
Headlining the freshmen group during preseason drills have been redshirts Angela Wiebe and Kim Stonehouse. In addition, Nadine Goldi, Kandice Kelly and Raelene Purnell have also raised eyebrows in the three-a-day practices.
Malauulu also announced that true-freshmen Carly Johnson and Patti Anderson will redshirt this fall.
MSU will begin their season at the University of Missouri Invitational, August 29-30. The ‘Cats will open against the No. 21 ranked Tigers next Friday.
