Fall Camp Report
Wednesday - Day TEN
* * * STITCHES * * *
Dusty Daws has always been an attention-getter in camp. He became MSU’s long snapper his freshman year, and is entering his third season as MSU’s mainstay in that area this fall. Last spring he moved to tackle from tight end because of injuries, and immediately turned heads. He enters his junior season as MSU’s third offensive tackle. But the former Bozeman High standout may have topped himself on Tuesday, when a pair of trips to the emergency room netted him a total of 16 stitches, believed to be a single-day Bobcat record. “Not one I’m proud of,” Daws said with a smile Wednesday morning. Daws, the son of former Bobcat All-America Brad Daws, took five stitches during practice when he suffered a cut after being hit in the head when his helmet flew off. Then, prior to evening meetings, a teammate slid a portable partition into Daws’ foot, which opened a cut that required 11 stitches. “A productive day,” cracked MSU offensive coordinator Don Bailey.

The number -- and quality -- of players sidelined with injuries is growing. That trend wasn’t lost on Mike Kramer on Wednesday. “I think (MSU Trainer) Rob Higgs could finish in the top half of the league with the guys he has with him today,” Kramer quipped. “Higgs has a pretty good team.” None of the injuries are expected to linger past next week.
* * * PROGRESS * * *
The Bobcats completed their second of four double-day practice sessions on Wednesday, and MSU Head Coach Mike Kramer remains pleased with his team’s progress. “The emphasis right now is on continued demonstrative knowledge,” he said. “We want players to know what they’re doing, and to be able to demonstrate they know what they’re doing.” Kramer has been impressed with three areas of his team’s play. “First, I continue to be very impressed with our defense,” he said of the unit that has led the Big Sky in each of the past two seasons in total defense. “Second, (center) Lawrence Figueroa continues to impress. “And third, I’m happy with the on-going development of our wide receivers,” he continued. “Brandon Roosevelt has come back from his slight hamstring injury to become our go-to guy. He looks excellent. Scott (Turnquist) and Corey (Smith) and Eddie (Sullivan) are playing at a level that gives us the look of a top-flight crew. And Matt McCullough has made some nice plays.” Offensive coordinator Don Bailey has been impressed with Roosevelt’s ability. “He plays fast,” Bailey said. “He has the ability to make the first guy miss. The potential there is tremendous.”
