Montana State spikers open fall drills

First-year head coach Miya Malauulu was satisfied with where her incoming squad was after a full day of passing, hitting, blocking and serving during Montana State’s first practice of the 2003 season.
“It was satisfying to see where we’re at,” Malauulu said. “We’re at a level higher than I expected us to be after one day of practice. However, we have a lot of work to accomplish in three weeks.”
Malauulu, who took over from former Montana State mentor Dave Gantt at the conclusion of the 2002 season, returns seven players, including four starters. Kamber Kelly, Roundup, Megan Zanto, Helena, Meggie Malyurek, Big Horn, Wyo., and LeAnn Kinvig, Sexsmith, Alberta, Canada, return to the program, which posted a 21-10 overall record and a 10-4 mark in Big Sky Conference action.
“We have a good nucleus returning and they’re setting the tone,” Malauulu said. “A good part of the day was also spent walking through drills and getting everyone on the same page. I thought we moved along at a good pace and everyone seemed to understand what we want to accomplish.”
Kelly, a 5-foot-9 setter who garnered All-Big Sky Conference honorable-mention kudos last fall, will guide the squad this season. “The first few days take a little patience as we get use to each other on the court,” Kelly said. “Overall, we had a good first day.”
The Bobcats will continue three-a-day workouts for the next two weeks, before scaling down practice time prior to the season-opener against the University of Missouri, Aug. 29 in Columbia. On Monday, the Tigers were ranked No. 21 in the USA Today/AVCA Preseason Coaches poll.
