Bobcats hit dog days

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- The dog days are here.
When Montana State’s football players report for its first of two practices on Monday morning at 9:30 am, the team will be entering the nether world of preseason practice called “two-a-days.” MSU will practice twice on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and per new NCAA rules will practice once on Tuesday and Thursday.
With one week’s worth of practice in the books, Bobcat coach Mike Kramer has been pleased with what he’s seen. “This is a veteran team, and it’s handled things in a business-like manner,” he said of his fourth camp as MSU’s head coach. “Things have gone smoothly.”
The Bobcats will be asked to rais their energy level along with the frequency of practices, Kramer said. “We have a tough week of camp coming, with three days of two-a-days. We have a tough, long, brutal week. Only the tough will survive.”
Kramer said things begin to drag for players and coaches during the second full week of preseason work. “This week will be tough on us,” he said, “because it’s the dog days of camp. We’re not halfway through it yet. The start of camp is too far in the past to really be excited about being on the field, and the first game is too far off to have that pre-game feel to it. It’s still just camp.”
The Bobcat coaching staff his installed most of the offensive and defensive schemes, so much of what remains in the two weeks before intensive game-planning begins is repetition and fine-tuning. “We put everything in during the first three days,” Kramer said. “With as much experience as this team has, that is a painless process. But there are still positions where we are young and don’t quite have the experience. We’re trying to bring the offensive line along quickly because of the three junior college players, but those new guys are swimming. They’re saturated.”
Kramer, however, relishes the intensity and struggle of two-a-days. “This team will get through this and thrive because of it. This team has tremendous leadership. It will be painful, but the process will be a lot of fun.”
The Bobcats are scheduled to practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 am and 2:45 pm. Tuesday and Thursday, the team will practice at 2:45 pm.
