Lyle Weese broke the MSU school record in the steeplechase and Carrie Damschen nearly did the same in the 400 hurdles Thursday, as both MSU seniors competed in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Stanford University. Both runners advanced to the next round of competition.
Weese finished sixth in heat two of the steeplechase and stands 11th with an MSU record and personal best mark of 8:33.35. With the mark he qualified for the steeplechase finals on Saturday afternoon.
"Lyle ran a different race than he ran at the NCAA Championships," in which he finished fifth and earned All-America honors, said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "He didn't make his big move in the fifth lap, but ran with the pack and made his move in the last lap. I think that's the best game-plan for Lyle, because he's so good at running people down. I think he'll follow that plan on Saturday in the finals."
Damschen's 58.89 was just short of her personal best (58.67). She finished fifth in heat two. Four athletes from each heat and the four next-best marks qualify for the semifinals, which are Friday afternoon.
"Carrie has stepped up to a higher level of competition, and really responded well," Kennedy said. "She didn't have a good experience at the NCAA meet, but I think she's running well right now. This is an exciting chance for both her and Lyle."
