Bobcats dole out track awards

Four Big Sky champions and an All-America topped the list of Montana State's annual track and field award winners, announced by MSU coach Dale Kennedy.
Lacy Hinzpeter, a senior from Minot, ND, and junior Blake Jackson (Glenrock, WY) earned MSU's Top Gun awards as the program's top point scorers. Hinzpeter scored 161.75 points during the outdoor season and led MSU to the team's first Big Sky outdoor championship. She also scored 162 career conference outdoor points, the second-highest total ever. Jackson led the men's team with 109 points, his second straight outdoor Top Gun award.
Lyle Weese, a senior from Dillon, earned Men's Track Athlete of the Year honors, winning league titles in the steeplechase and 5,000 meters and earning All-America honors in the steeplechase. Hinzpeter and Ariana Lee, a senior from Lander, WY, shared honors on the women's team. Lee was the Big Sky 10,000 m champion, and finished second in the 5,000. Hinzpeter won the 100 and was second in the 200.
Jackson won Outstanding Men's Field Athlete honors. He won his second straight Big Sky Outdoor shot put title, and also won the discus championship. Junior Jen Allen from Billings was the women's Field Athlete of the Year. She set a school hammer throw mark, the second-best mark in Big Sky history, and scored 22 points at the Big Sky meet.
Erin Jones, a sophomore from Harlowton, is the Women's Most Improved athlete. She set a school record in the triple jump, and her performance at the Big Sky Championships in that event helped seal MSU's championship. She also scored 5,043 in the heptathlon. Kevin Clary won the men's award, setting personal bests in the 1500 and steeplechase. He finished second at the Big Sky meet in the 1500.
Tanner Rauk from Kalispell and Lindsay Vennes from Fromberg were named the team's freshmen of the year. Rauk was fourth at the Big Sky meet in the shot put, while Vennes tied for fifth in the high jump.
