Bobcat track lands recruits

Caleb Ambrose of Kalispell, Lori Anderson of Everett, Wash., Rachel Estacion of Rapid City, S.D., Steve Heberly of Havre, Julie Ho from Baker, and Justin Schwartzenberger from Butte will each join the MSU track program in the fall.
Ambrose becomes the latest Flathead High distance standout to join the Bobcat cross country and track teams. Ambrose finished ninth in the 2000 state cross country meet, second in 2001, and third last fall. He helped the Braves to four straight state championships. He posted the best times in the state in the 3200 meters (9:36) and is third in the 1600 (4:19.4), both with life-best marks, and won the state championship in both events. Caleb is having a great spring, and really has a strong connection to the Kalispell kids that have done so well here (such as Kevin Murphy and Kevin Clary), said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. He is an excellent student, one of the top 10 seniors at Flathead High, and I'm excited that Caleb is continuing our distance running pipeline to Kalispell.
Estacion also hails from a traditional high school cross country power. Rapid City Stevens has won the last eight straight South Dakota titles, and Estacion was a team captain last fall. She was 11th in the state cross country meet last fall, and as a junior was fifth in the state 3200 meter race. Rachel really wants to be a Bobcat, Kennedy said. She sought us out and really sold herself to us. She will add depth to our women's program, and will bring a great personality and great leadership skills to the table, as well.
Anderson brings good credentials to the MSU sprint crew. She finished fourth in the Washington state 4A meet as a junior last spring. She has posted best marks of 12.21 in the 100 and 25.40 in the 200 this year. Lori is a powerful sprinter who brings good skills and knowledge of her events to our program, said MSU sprints and hurdles coach Christy Mastel.
Heberly won Class A State Championships in the 100 meters with an all-class record mark of 10.74, the 200 (he has a season's best of 21.78), and the 400 (with a mark of 48.40). Heberly has won three straight 100 and 200 meter titles, and has anchored two state championship 400 meter relay teams. A two-time all-state receiver at Havre High, Heberly will play in the Montana Shrine Game this summer, and played basketball and baseball in Havre. I am very excited about Steve's performance at the State Track Championships (in Helena) last weekend, said Mastel. He ran outstanding times in very hot conditions, and he should make an immediate impact on our team next year.

She also finished second in the 100 meters, 200, and 400 at the Class B Divisionals this year. Julie is an excellent student and a great athlete who will be a great fit in our program, Mastel said. He finished second in the State AA 110 and 300 meter hurdles last year. Justin is a very solid hurdler who should make a good adjustment to the different hurdle races next year.
