Raelene (Purnell) will add depth to our middle position, Malauulu said. "She is an athletic kid who will be able to contribute immediately."
Purnell, who prepped at Lindsay Thurber High School, guided the Raiders to a 65-3 overall record last season. In addition, LTHS captured the gold medal at both the 2001 and 2002 Provincial Championships. For her efforts, Purnell was named to the first-team all star squad.
"Raelene is the type of athlete that can play all the way around the court," Malauulu said. "Where we will use her most is in the front court. She has the ability to hit a lot of different sets and that will help us open up our offense."
Purnell, who garnered female high school MVP honors as a freshman and junior, played club volleyball for the Queens Extreme squad that won a bronze medal at the 2003 Canadian National Championships. An outstanding athlete, she also competed in basketball, soccer and track and field for the Raiders. In addition, she is also strong in the classroom earning third place honors as an all-around student last year.
Purnell completes Malauulu’s first recruiting class, which also includes Kandice Kelly, Roundup, Nadine Goldi, Oberacch, Switzerland, Carly Johnson, Barnwell, Alberta, Canada and Patti Anderson, Deer Lodge.
