Déjà vu all over again for MSU women

Early last week, Damschen said that the feeling on this year's Montana State women's track and field team was kind of the same as it was in March of 2001, when the 'Cats hosted and won the Big Sky women's indoor championship meet. She had no idea how similar things would turn out.
With Montana State locked in a hotly-contested team battle with Weber State, just like two years ago, the team faced the meet's last two events with a chance to win: the triple jump, and the 4 x 400 meter relay.
And like two years ago, all eyes were on the triple jump runway.
Oh, I'm glad I didn't know that, laughed sophomore Erin Jones, who uncorked a personal best triple jump of 40-11.75 to help seal MSU's win. Moments later, the Bobcat relay team -- anchored by Damschen -- finished second to wrap things up.
Yeah, it was eery, Damschen said. I distinctly remember the indoor meet, and this was very similar. I said earlier in the week it would come down to the relay, and I'm glad it did. It was a fun way to win.
Kennedy saw the similarities, too. It was a lot like two years ago, said MSU's long-time coach, who has now won four Big Sky track titles and a pair of cross country crowns. We were battling Weber State, we were watching the triple jump, and we were waiting on the relay.
Although Montana State's season continues with the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Lincoln, Nebr., in two weeks -- nearly 30 Bobcats have qualified -- Kennedy was not hesitant to put this year's women's team in historical context. This is a great bunch of kids, a veteran bunch, and they really responded. This was a huge meet, a huge effort.
