Signing with MSU is Nadine Goldi, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Oberaach, Switzerland, and Carly Johnson, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from Barnwell, Alberta, Canada. In addition, Malauulu announced that Patti Anderson, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Deer Lodge, will walk-on to the Bobcat squad this fall.
Goldi, who attended Kantonsschule Wattwil High School in Oberaach, Switzerland, has played three years with the Swiss Senior National team and was part of the squad that participated in the European Cup. She also played with the Swiss Junior National team that competed in the 2000 European Championships. Goldi was a starter on her club team last season, which participated at the National League A level. She plans to study geography at MSU.
"We’re excited to have Nadine (Goldi) in our program," Malauulu said. "Although she’ll enter the program as a true-freshman, she’ll bring a lot of experience at a high level to our squad. She is an outstanding ball-control player and she’ll be a great fit for Montana State."
Johnson was a three-year starter at W.R. Meyers High School where she led the Rebels to three gold medals in zone competition and two gold medals at the 3A Provincial Championships. During her high school career, W.R. Meyers won 17 high school tournaments. For her efforts, Johnson was a two-time first-team all-star selection.
"Carly (Johnson) was a key to our success," said W.R. Meyers head coach Del Cleland. "But just as importantly, she is a tremendous player who knows her role and supports her teammates."
Last season, the Rebels captured eight of ten tournament titles, including provincials and went 78-3 in match play.
"Carly is a physically strong athlete," Malauulu said. "She’ll continue the great tradition we’ve had at the middle blocker position. As she gains added experience and becomes familiar with our system, we anticipate her becoming a major contributor to our program."
Anderson, a two-time all-state selection at Powell County High School, was named one of the top 12 volleyball players in the state by the Billings Gazette this season. Anderson played in the State A, B, C All-Star Tournament and garnered MVP hitter honors. In addition, she is a three-time first-team all-conference selection and is a four-time all-state academic honoree, as well. An outstanding student, she ranks first in her class of 72 and has aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
"Patti (Anderson) is an outstanding student-athlete and the type of person we want to have in our program," Malauulu said. "She is also a very good athlete and has a hunger to learn and develop her skills. As her volleyball skills catch up to her athleticism, we think she can become a very good player at Montana State."
Malauulu will look to sign one more athlete during the spring signing period.
