Lulay Leads 'Cats in Blue-Gold

Montana State's sensational sophomore quarterback picked up where he left off last fall,completing 15 of his 22 passes for 180 yards to lead a patchwork Bobcat offense in the team'sfirst major scrimmage of the spring. MSU scored a total of two offensive touchdowns andconverted three field goals at Daylis Stadium in Billings Saturday.
This was a very veteran day, MSU coach Mike Kramer said. Our veteran players reallyshined. The offense moved the ball, and that was a good sign. Travis Lulay looked very sharp.
It was a good day.
Lulay led the first offense to a touchdown and two field goals against the team's top defensive
unit, which has led the Big Sky in total defense the past two seasons. MSU's offensive line
currently features All-America tackle Brent Swaggert, playing primarily guard and center,
along with three true freshmen and a converted tight end. Backup quarterback Brent Owens,
playing in his first spring scrimmage, completed 10 of his 22 passes for 128 yards and a
touchdown.
I'm ecstatic with the play of the offensive line, Kramer said. For three freshmen -- to step in
beside Brent and play like they did today is impressive. I'm very happy with what happened in
the O-line.
The play of his offensive front didn't escape Lulay's notice. The young offensive linemen did a
pretty good job, he said. They got pretty tired at the end, there's not a lot of guys (healthy),
but they did a good job.
Lulay came out firing, hitting Billings native Scott Turnquist on an 11-yard gain on the first play
of the game. That was a gift to him, Lulay laughed after the game. He capped the drive with a
perfect 34-yard scoring strike to freshman Brandon Roosevelt. Lulay completed all four of his
passes for 56 yards on the drive.
Lulay had plenty of company on the day's offensive highlight reel. Roosevelt caught five passes
for 49 yards, while junior college transfer Eddie Sullivan (24 yards) and sophomore running
back David Mayfield (44 yards) also had four catches.
Turnquist, who started the day with a catch, provided the day's best drama. One play after
watching a Lulay pass sail over his head, the Billings senior caught a pass down the sideline for
77 yards. He finished the day with three catches. It was a corner route, he said. Travis had
to scramble, and I adjusted upfield. He threw a good ball.
Mayfield split tailback duties with fellow sophomore Mike Williams and redshirt freshman Josh
Black, getting 22 yards rushing on 13 carries to go with his 44 receiving yards. Williams had
seven yards on as many carries, while Black rushed for 33 yards on five carries.
I don't draw any conclusions from what I saw of the tailbacks today, Kramer said, alluding to
the offensive front's injury situation. I may not until fall.
The only turnover of the day happened in a showdown between the team's offensive and
defensive leaders. Kane Ioane stepped in front of Roosevelt to intercept a Lulay pass. Travis
forced it, Kramer said. Lulay said, That's going to happen in the spring. They're going to win
some, we're going to win some. You just have to try to minimize mistakes.
Ioane led the Bobcat defense, getting a pass breakup, an interception and a tackle-for-loss.
Jon Montoya had three sacks. Nate Cook (37 yards, 26 yards) and EJ Cochrane (25 yards)
each connected on their only live-action field goal tries.
The Bobcats are scheduled to practice on Monday and Wednesday, and will conduct a short
scrimmage Friday afternoon.
