Burrows Leads Bobcat Women Past Vikings

Burrows, who is battling a cold, converted nine-of-15 from the field, including a five-of-nine effort in the first half. Also notching double-figures for Montana State (19-7, 10-3) were Isabel Stubbs and Brandi Lewis. Stubbs finished the game with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Lewis poured in 11 points, converting five-of-six from the line.
“It was shear determination,” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “We weren’t going to be denied. This team fought through the adversity of last weekend and put together a very solid effort.”
Portland State (12-14, 7-6) jumped out early, taking a 25-15 advantage on a Nikki Petticrew three-pointer at the 9-minutes, 58-seconds mark. The Bobcats responded and cut the margin to 33-32 on a Candis Wilcox jumper, and a Sheila Hutchison layin as the first half ended gave MSU a 36-35 lead at intermission.
“Hutch’s (Sheila Hutchison) bucket at the end of the half really gave us a lift,” Potera-Haskins said. “It really gave us confidence and some momentum.”
In the second stanza, PSU established a 44-38 lead at the 17-minutes, 38-seconds mark on a Sarah Hedgepeth field-goal. Trailing 55-50 with under 11-minutes to play, Montana State went on a 15-2 run to take a 65-57 advantage following a Stubbs basket. The Bobcat run was sparked by two three-pointers by Lewis. MSU converted five-of-six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
“It was a tremendous job by our team,” Potera-Haskins said. “Kati (Burrows) played very tough despite not feeling well. We also got a nice lift from the bench with Jana (Smith), Cassie (Johnson) and Brandi (Lewis).
For the game, MSU shot 48 percent from the filed, including 50 percent in the second half.
PSU was paced in the loss by Hedgepeth with 22 points and 17 rebounds, while Petticrew added 12 points and four assists.
The Bobcats will play at Eastern Washington on Saturday night in the final regular-season game of the season. A Bobcat win would give Montana State its second consecutive Big Sky
