Weber State downs Bobcats for tourney title

Robertson, the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year scored a team-high 18 points, and the Wildcats converted 11-of-14 free throws in the second stanza to capture its second consecutive Big Sky Conference Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships with a 63-52 victory over Montana State, Saturday night.
In the second period, the Bobcats could only muster four points in the final five minutes and went one-of-six from the line.
"I thought we did a great job establishing ourselves in the first half and continuing that in the second," said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. "Once we got the 10-point lead, (Sheila) Robertson go hot, Weber State got to the line and we didn’t. That was the game."
Montana State (21-8) built its largest lead at 41-31 on an Isabel Stubbs layin with 14:51 remaining in the game. Weber State (21-8) then started its run going on an 18-8 stretch to tie the game at 49-all with 4:56 left following a Karsen Muller free-throw.
The Wildcats then took their first lead of the second half at 51-49 on a Crystal Howe field-goal and WSU took off on a 14-2 run to secure the victory.
"We got the lead and then couldn’t score," Potera-Haskins said. "We didn’t get out quick enough on Robertson and they got in their comfort zone."
Robertson finished the game with 21 points, including four three-pointers. Also notching double-digits for the Wildcats were Julie Gjertsen 12, Muller 11 and Howe with ten.
Montana State was led in the loss by Kati Burrows with 22 points on ten-of-22 from the field, while Isabel Stubbs notched her second double-double of the tournament with 13 points and ten rebounds.
"I think we got a little tired," Stubbs said. "One person got the hot hand and we couldn’t shut her down. It’s not the end of the world and we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a WNIT berth."
Burrows, who paced the Bobcats in the opening stanza with 14 points on six-of-11 shooting from the floor, got Montana State out to a quick 7-0 advantage on a three-pointer, followed by a Candis Wilcox layin. However, Weber State responded and took its first lead of the game at 13-11 with 12:01 remaining after a Gjertsen field-goal.
The Bobcats answered back to take a 30-25 margin on a pair of Belinda Stubbs free throws at the 2:37 mark, before Gjertsen scored the final five-points of half to close the gap to 30-29 at intermission.
For the game, MSU shot 38 percent from the field and out-rebounded Weber State 39 to 37. The ‘Cats ended the contest shooting a season low 40 percent (4-10) from the line.
For her efforts, Robertson was named tournament MVP. Also named to the all-tournament squad were Howe, Gjertsen, Burrows, Crystal Baird of Montana and Kathleen Nygaard of Eastern Washington.
MSU will possibly find out its fate for a WNIT spot late Sunday night.
