Bearcats Declaw Bobcat Women at Wells Fargo Holiday Classic

“It’s a heart-breaking loss,” Potera said. “We certainly had our chances to put the game away, but we just couldn’t convert down the stretch. Give Binghamton credit for playing 40-minutes of basketball.”
Montana State (5-1) held a 50-36 advantage at the 7:22 mark of the second stanza on a Sheila Hutchison three-pointer. However, Binghamton (4-1) closed the margin to 52-47 with 3:29 left on a three-pointer. Following a Belinda Stubbs free throw, the Bobcats held a 53-47 margin at the 2:03 mark, but the Bearcats closed out the game on a 12-2 run to snatch the victory.
The Bobcats played the second half mostly without starter Jana Smith who fouled out at the 6:49 mark of the second stanza.
“Obviously, we need to learn from this experience,” Potera-Haskins said. “In our last three games, we’ve held good leads, but have been unable to put teams away. That’s something we need to work on.”
In the loss, Hutchison paced the Bobcats with 16 points, while Kati Burrows also notched double-figures with 11 points. Hutchison also ended the game with six assists and six steals.
Binghamton won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Bobcats 39-32 and went 18-of-21 from the line, while MSU was ten-of-16.
The Bearcats were paced in the win by Rachel Laws and Leala Wegwerth with 18 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bobcats opened the game on a Tanner three-pointer and built an early 15-4 lead at the 13:27 mark on a Hutchison offensive put-back. The Bearcats answered back and tied the score at 24-all on a three-pointer with under ten-seconds remaining in the half. However, Tanner ended the half the same way it started hitting a trey as time expired to give the ‘Cats a 27-24 lead advantage at intermission.
“I thought we played a solid first-half and built a nice lead,” Potera-Haskins said. “However, we couldn’t get our shots to fall in the final ten-minutes and we put them on the line way too much.”
MSU will play Western Michigan at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the consolation game of the Wells Fargo Holiday Classic.
In the opening-round game of the classic, host Arizona State posted a 75-66 victory over Western Michigan. The Sun Devils were paced by Betsy Boardman, who tallied a game-high 20 points and added nine rebounds. ASU had a commanding 50-24 advantage on the boards.
