Montana State Cross Country Squads Announce Award Winners
Dec. 5, 2003 – BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Montana State men’s and women’s cross country programs have announced their award winners for the 2003 season. MSU women’s standout Ariana Lee and Jonathan Gibson, who paced the men’s squad in four of five meets, have garnered the programs Top Gun award, announced head coach Dale Kennedy.
Lee, a native of Lander, Wyo., became the first women to win the program’s top honor three years in a row. She ran No. 1 for the Bobcats this season and received Big Sky Conference and NCAA Mountain All-Region accolades. Lee was a two-time NCAA Cross Country Championship qualifier and was a NCAA Track and Field national participant, as well.
Gibson, a native of Woodinville, Wash., placed fourth at this fall’s Big Sky Conference championship, and finished 12th at the NCAA Mountain Region meet. For his efforts, he garnered all-region and all-conference recognition.
The Bobcats also announced their most improved performers. The women’s award went to Mayra Morgado, while the men’s honor was given to Tony Bachman.
Morgado was MSU’s No. 2 runner this season, after being the Bobcats’ No. 7 runner during the 2002 season. This season, she garnered All-Big Sky Conference honors after placing ninth at the league meet. Morgado placed 37th overall at the NCAA Mountain Region race.
Bachman, a redshirt freshman from Gillette, Wyo., did not make the roster as a true freshman. However, this season he ran No. 3 for the Bobcats in four of five races. Bachman finished 23rd at the Big Sky Championships and was 45th overall the NCAA Mountain Region race.
