Montana State senior Sheila Hutchison scored a game-high 22 points and the Bobcats converted 29-of-34 free throws to post an 83-72 win over UC Irvine, Saturday night in the Bren Center.
Montana State (7-3) built a 26-point cushion with 11:16 remaining in the game, following a Belinda Stubbs basket of an offensive rebound. However, the Anteaters fought back and pulled to within 74-68 on a pair of Stephanie Duda free throws with 2:19 remaining. MSU iced the game in the final two minutes, connecting on nine-of-ten free throws.
“I’m really proud of the way our kids played, considering we played Friday night in Portland and then traveled most of the day (Saturday),” said MSU head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “It certainly wasn’t an ideal situation; but our kids really came out strong at the beginning of both halves, and that was the difference.”
Also reaching double-figures for the Bobcats were Jana Smith 16, Jaimey Tanner 12 and Belinda Stubbs 12. Smith converted 11-of-12 from the line, while Stubbs came off the bench and added a team-high nine rebounds.
For the game, MSU out-rebounded the taller Anteaters 53-38. Montana State received eight rebounds apiece from Kati Burrows, Hutchison and Smith. The Bobcats also withstood late foul trouble that saw Hutchison, Burrows and Nina Sanford all knocked out of the game.
UC Irvine (0-4) was paced in the loss by Christina Callaway with 19 points and ten rebounds.
In the first stanza, the Bobcats stormed out to a 12-2 lead on a Hutchison three-pointer at the 16:35 mark and built the margin to 32-12 with 6:20 remaining on a Belinda Stubbs offensive put-back. UCI outscored Montana State 19-10 down the stretch to close the gap to 42-31 at intermission.
“We got our second road-sweep of the season, and that’s something to be very happy with,” Potera-Haskins said. “We did a nice job of executing and to come away with two victories over quality opponents is something we will build upon.”
MSU will travel to El Paso, Texas, Dec. 22 to face UTEP in its final game before the holiday break.
