Bobcat Women Push Streak to Four with Victory Over Sam Houston State

Montana State junior Jana Smith notched a team-high 18 points to lead three Bobcat players in double-digits as MSU captured its fourth consecutive win with a 75-70 victory over Sam Houston State, Saturday afternoon at the Texas State Century Tel Classic.
Smith, a 5-foot- 7 native of Ronan, converted seven-of-12 from the field and was three-of-three from the free throw line. Also in double-figures for Montana State (4-0) were Sheila Hutchison and Kati Burrows with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Burrows led all players with nine rebounds, while Hutchison added a game-high six assists and five steals.
Sam Houston State (0-3) staked an early 18-12 lead, before the Bobcats answered with a 31-10 run to enter intermission with a 45-32 advantage. The Bearcats received 24 points in the first half from senior Stacy Allen.
“I think we came out a little too tense in the first half,” said Bobcat head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “Sam Houston was very loosy-goosy and we gave them some good looks, and to their credit, they hit some shots.
“But to our credit, the kids played good defense and we hit the shots when we needed a basket.”
In the second stanza, Montana State held Allen to three points and built a 19-point margin, before Sam Houston State closed to within 75-70 in the waning moments.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 50 percent from the field and were 14-of-17 from the free throw line. Also contributing to the Bobcat attack was post player Belinda Stubbs, who registered eight points on four-of-five from the field. MSU point guard Jaimey Tanner finished with nine points, including three three-pointers.
Sam Houston State was led in the loss by Allen and Kelley Kramer with 27 and 16 points, respectively.
MSU will host Montana Tech on Tuesday night in Worthington Arena.
