Hutchison Paces Montana State Women Over Texas State

The win was MSU’s third straight to open the season.
Hutchison, a 5-foot-9 native of Blackfoot, Idaho, converted six-of-nine from the field, while going 12-of-15 from the free throw line. Also in double-digits for Montana State (3-0) were Jaimey Tanner 16 and Belinda Stubbs 10. MSU was led under the boards by Kati Burrows with a team-high ten rebounds.
“I was pleased with our performance,” said third-year head coach Robin Potera-Haskins. “I was thrilled we made our free throws down the stretch. That was an area we put a lot of work into this past week.”
Texas State (0-2) took an early 10-9 advantage, before the Bobcats rattled of a 12-0 run to grab a 21-10 margin at the 11:08 mark following a Hillary Scott three-pointer. MSU held a 34-26 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Montana State outscored TSU 27-7 over the first nine and a half minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 61-33 on a Scott lay-up. Texas State battled back to close the margin to 65-54 with 5:14 remaining; however, the Bobcats converted 16-of-18 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 55 percent from the field and were 23-of-29 from the charity stripe.
“We really came out strong in the second half and that’s becoming our trademark,” Potera-Haskins said. “The kids are coming out very strong on the defensive end, and that really gets our running game going.”
Texas State was led in the loss by Julie Brooks and Tori Talbert with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
“This was a big win for our program,” Potera-Haskins said. “Texas State is a very athletic team that went to the NCAAs last season. And, they return the MVP (Talbert) of the Southland Conference that led them to a league championship.”
MSU will face Sam Houston State on Saturday afternoon.
