Gibson and Lee Compete Well at NCAA Cross Country Championships

Gibson, a native of Woodinville, Wash., completed the 10-kilometer course in a time of 30:46.7. Last year, Gibson finished 133rd overall. The individual winner on Monday was Dathan Ritzenhein of Colorado, who covered the race in 29:41.1.
“Jonathan (Gibson) had a solid race,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “He would tell you he could have done better, but I thought his performance was a significant improvement over last season. It was the best 10K of his career.”
Lee, a senior from Lander, Wyo., covered the women’s six-kilometer race in 21:25.2 Shalene Flanagan of North Carolina captured the individual title in a time of 19:30.4. Stanford won both the men’s and women’s team titles.
“Ari’s (Lee) time was 12-seconds faster than what she recorded at the Pre-Nationals earlier in the year and on the same course,” Kennedy said. “I’m happy that she could produce a higher finish than last season.
“Both Jonathan and Ari were facing unfriendly weather,” Kennedy said. “Everyone faced the same problems. It was zero degrees when you added in the wind chill. I was very pleased with the way our two kids handled the conditions. They each had outstanding seasons.”
The NCAA Championships concludes the 2003 cross country season.
