Bobcats Take Tourney Title

Jason Erickson scored 15 points and earned tournament MVP honors, leading Montana State to a 57-54 win over Howard in the championship game of Florida International's Hampton Inn Tipoff Classic.
Erickson had six assists and four steals Saturday, playing all 40 minutes when Frank Brown was injured early in the game. Matt Towsley added 11 points and seven boards, while Nick Dissly had 11 points and six rebounds. Towsley was named all-tournament.
"The game had a lot of ups and downs, and it's great to hang on and win a game like this with such a young team," said MSU coach Mick Durham. "The tempo was not real fast because we lost Frank early, but Jason played well and we were able to stay even on the boards and cut down on our turnovers."
The Bobcats broke the game's seventh tie with a Nick Dissly free throw with 1:08 to play, and Jason Erickson iced the win with a pair of free throws at the 11 second mark.
Montana State plays nationally-ranked Florida on Tuesday night in Gainesville. Tipoff is 5 pm MST.
