Montana State traded Cajun cookin' for corn-fed beef Sunday.
The Bobcats play Northern Iowa on Saturday, November 29, in the first round of the Division I-AA Football Playoffs in Cedar Falls. The Panthers won the Gateway Conference this year, compiled a 10-2 record, won a share of the Gateway Championship, and scored 22 fourth-quarter points to beat previously unbeaten Southern Illinois in its last game (Nov. 15).
Bobcat coach Mike Kramer is not unfamiliar with the Panthers. "Northern Iowa has an outstanding program year after year," he said. "I played there as a head coach in 1994 and as an assistant in 1992 and 1989. Their dome is a rockin' place. They have a great game day atmosphere, and it is loud. It will be an awesome experience."
UNI's two losses came at the hands of defending national champion Western Kentucky and Division I-A Iowa State. The Panthers are led by running back Terrance Freeney, who has rushed for 1,135 yards, and cornerback Tom Petrie, who has a quarterback efficiency rating of 144.66.
"Northern Iowa is a balanced, two-back team that plays hard and is very well-coached," Kramer said. "This is an outstanding opportunity for our football team, but also a tremendous challenge."
