Bobcat Spikers Take Champs the Distance, But Fall in Five

“I couldn’t be any prouder of the way our kids competed,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more than what this young team left on the floor. It was a great effort, but we came up a little short.”
Eastern Washington (22-7) claimed the opening game by hitting a red-hot .476 from the field. In the second stanza, Montana State (18-11) rallied from a 23-20 deficit behind the play of Zanto, who was part of the final three points on a kill and two blocks.
In the third game, the ‘Cats again rallied, this time from a 27-24 deficit. Zanto produced five kills down the stretch before Meggie Malyurek closed out the game with a kill to give MSU a 2-1 advantage. The fourth stanza belonged to Eastern Washington as the Eagles rolled behind a .385 attack mark.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Bobcats staked an early 7-4 lead following a Malyurek kill, however, a EWU 6-0 run gave the Eagles a 10-7 advantage and a margin they never relinquished.
Aside from Zanto’s contribution, the Bobcats also received 13 kills and 21 digs from LeAnn Kinvig. Defensively, MSU was paced by freshman Kandice Kelly with a season-high 25 digs. Also in double-digit digs were Kamber Kelly 17, and Malyurek 15. Kelly dished out 54 assists in the loss.
“Megan Zanto had an outstanding match,” Malauulu said. “She was unstoppable and just about everything we ran to her, she terminated. It was an amazing performance.”
Eastern Washington was led in the win by Keva Sonderen and Megan Kitterman with 28 and 22 kills, respectively.
EWU will face Sacramento State in the Big Sky title match. The Hornets were a 3-1 winner over Idaho State on Friday night.
