Bobcat Spikers Chop Down Jacks in Tourney Opener

“We did a very nice job in serve-receive and that allowed us to get into a pretty good rhythm,” said first-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We also did a nice job defensively and we overcame a little lull in the second game. In all, it was a solid performance.”
Montana State (18-10) jumped out early in game one taking a 13-5 lead on a Stonehouse kill. MSU held a 27-23 advantage following an Angela Wiebe kill, before Northern Arizona (13-15) rallied to pull to within 28-27. However, the Bobcats held off the fast-charging Lumberjacks and MSU setter Kamber Kelly won a joust at the net to give Montana State the victory.
In the second stanza, NAU held a 12-7 lead, before the Bobcats rallied to take a 16-15 advantage on a Stonehouse kill. The ‘Jacks answered and took a 26-22 advantage; however, the ‘Cats rallied to outscore NAU 8-2 down the stretch, winning on a Northern Arizona hitting error.
In the final set, MSU cruised to 17-10 lead following a LeAnn Kinvig kill and held the margin, before winning the match on another Kinvig kill.
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack was Kelly with seven kills, a .545 hitting percentage, 35 assists and ten digs. Also in double-figure digs for the ‘Cats were Malyurek 14, Kinvig 12, and Kandice Kelly 12. MSU was paced at the net by Wiebe with a match-high six blocks.
NAU was paced in the loss by Ellie Butterfield with 14 kills and 15 digs.
