Women's Basketball cruise to a 91-66 victory over UC-Riverside

BOZEMAN, Montana – The Montana State Women's Basketball team opened the 2003-04 season with a win over UC-Riverside 91-66 at Worthington Arena. Four Bobcats scored in double figures led by guard Sheila Hutchison who finished with 25 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Junior Jana Smith scored 16 points, Joanna Hixon scored 12 points, and Nina Sanford finished with 10 points.
Hutchison set the tone for the Bobcats with the first points of the game. The Bobcats went on a 2-0 run in the first two minutes of play before UC-Riverside scored their first point of the game on a field goal at 18:02.
The half ended with a buzzer beater by Sanford to put Montana State in the lead 38-37. The Bobcats shot 40.0 percent (14/25) from the field in the first half. Hutchison went 5-of-8 on field goals, and 3-of-5 behind the arc for 13 points in the first half.
The Bobcats began to dominate the second half. Senior Kati Burrows came out strong following halftime. After a scoreless first half, Burrows tallied two field goals and four free-throws for eight total points by the game's end. Belinda Stubbs and Jaimey Tanner also kicked it up in the second half, finishing with 8 points a piece.
Scoring in double figures were Hutchison (25), Smith (16), Joanna Hixon (12), and Sanford (10). UC-Riverside was led by Casandra Reeves who finished with 23 points for the night and 4 assists. The Bobcats shot 43.4 percent on field goals compared to UC-Riversides 32.1 percent, and out rebounded UC-Riverside in total rebounds 49-40.
Montana State will play Utah State on Monday, Nov. 24 at 7:05 p.m. at Worthington Arena.
