Bobcats Spikers Head to Big Sky Tourney

BIG SKY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT:
The Montana State volleyball squad will play in its eighth straight Big Sky Conference tournament this weekend in Cheney, Wash. The Bobcats will enter as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Northern Arizona on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 9 p.m. (MST). The other first-round match will feature No. 3 Idaho State vs. No. 6 Portland State at 7 p.m. Should the ‘Cats defeat Northern Arizona, the highest remaining seed will meet No. 2 Sacramento State, while the lowest remaining seed will face host No. 1 Eastern Washington University. Those matches are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively. The Big Sky Conference title match will be played Saturday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. on Reese Court.

REWRAPPING THE WEEK THAT WAS:
The Bobcats split a pair of matches last weekend, losing at E. Washington 3-0 and winning at Portland State, 3-2. Against the Eagles, MSU was paced by LeAnn Kinvig and Megan Zanto with six kills each, while Meggie Malyurek added a team-high 16 digs. In its win over Portland State, the ‘Cats received a career-high 17 kills from Kim Stonehouse and a career-high 60 assists from Kamber Kelly.
THREE NAMED TO BIG SKY ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS:
Three Montana State players were named to the 2003 Big Sky All-Conference team, announced Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Megan Zanto garnered All-Big Sky second-team honors, while Kamber Kelly and Meggie Malyurek earned honorable mention kudos. Zanto, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Helena, led the Big Sky Conference in blocking this season, averaging 1.55 per game. That number also ranked her among the top ten blockers in the country this season. In addition, Zanto averaged 2.81 kills, while hitting .260 from the floor. Kelly, a 5-foot-9 junior from Roundup, averaged 10.11 assists per game and 3.23 digs, both of which ranked among the top ten in the Big Sky Conference. In addition, Kelly led the Bobcats with 27 service aces and 16 double-double matches. Last season, Kelly also garnered honorable mention accolades, after being named the 2001 Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year. Malyurek, a 6-foot outside hitter from Big Horn, Wyo., paced the Bobcats averaging 3.29 kills, while chipping in 3.23 digs per outing. She notched a career-high 24 kills against Northern Arizona on Nov. 1.
