Gibson, who finished 12th at the NCAA Mountain Regional last weekend, was one of four individuals not associated with a NCAA qualifying team to make the Mountain Region at-large squad. In all, 31 teams and 255 individuals will be participating in the NCAA meet.
Last weekend, Gibson covered the 10-kilometer course in a time of 31:19.4. His time was only 12-seconds from a third-place finish. Earlier this month, he garnered all-Big Sky Conference honors after finishing fourth at the league championships.
“Jonathan has been running very well and I’m glad he’s still able to compete,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “He’s really looking forward to competing against the best in the nation next week.”
The news of an at-large bid for MSU senior Ari Lee wasn’t as favorable. Lee, who has been the Bobcats’ top runner the past two seasons, did not receive one of the at-large berths. The native of Lander, Wyo., missed an automatic invitation to the NCAA championships by .06 seconds.
“For Ariana (Lee), it’s just a tragedy,” Kennedy said. “To miss by only a half-second is heartbreaking. She has been an outstanding role-model for the kids in our program.”
Last season, the entire MSU men’s team, along with Lee, participated in the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
