Montana State Spikers Hold On to Defeat Vikings

Trailing 10-6 in the fifth game, Montana State (17-10, 7-7) rallied with the help of three Malyurek kills to close out the match on a 9-2 run and winning on a Portland State hitting error.
“I was happy with the way the kids fought back and closed out the match,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “However, we should not have been in that position to begin with. He had comfortable leads in the third and fourth games, but for some reason stopped playing.
“We’re still looking for that kid that wants to step-up in crunch time,” Malauulu said. “We’ll take the momentum from this match and carry it forward into the Big Sky Conference tournament.”
MSU survived 13 times in the opening game, before a Stonehouse kill gave the Bobcats the win. In the second stanza, MSU took a 22-16 advantage on an Angela Wiebe kill, before Portland State (14-13, 3-11) answered to close to with 22-21. The Bobcats outscored PSU 8-4 down the stretch, winning the game on a Megan Zanto block.
“We did an excellent job establishing the block from the start,” Malauulu said. “And, we hit very well. I was pleased that we came out prepared.”
In the third game, Montana State held a 16-10 advantage following a Malyurek and Zanto block. However, the Vikings outscored MSU 20-10 and won the set on a Richell Wilson kill. In the fourth stanza, the Bobcats again held a comfortable 23-18 advantage before the Vikings rallied to tie the match following a Malyurek hitting error.
Also contributing the Bobcat victory was Zanto, who notched 16 kills, a .517 hitting percentage and ten blocks. Wiebe also paced MSU at the net with ten blocks and seven kills. Setter Kamber Kelly dished out a career-high 60 assists and added 16 digs. Kandice Kelly led the Bobcats defensively with a match-high 22 digs.
PSU was paced in the loss by Wilson with 28 kills and 13 digs.
MSU will play Northern Arizona in the first round of the Big Sky Conference tournament next Thursday in Cheney, Wash.
