Bozeman, MT – Senior guard Jason Erickson netted 28 points, including 16 in the first-half and a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line as the Bobcats defeated Ukraine MBC Nikolaev 79-73 at Worthington Arena Friday night to finish off the exhibition season in front of a crowd of 3537.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a Matt Towsley field goal and never looked back. MSU maintained a steady lead for the entire first half, their biggest lead of the half coming after Senior Jason Erickson connected on a two for two from the free throw line and gave MSU a 33-20 lead with 3:28 left in the half. The Ukraine battled back and tried to cut the lead, but the Bobcats kept the momentum and had a 34-28 lead heading into the locker room.
The Bobcats continued to control the game in the second half, exploding to a 76-56 run down the stretch with the help of Matt Towsley’s 8 points and Frank Brown’s 7 points. The Bobcats saw their lead grow to 22, at 78-56 with under 2:53 minutes to go. Leading by 22 points with 2:50 remaining, Coach Durham was able to substitute freely for the rest of the game.
The Ukraine made a huge run of their own and held MSU to 1 point in the final 2:30, and finished the game at 79-73.
Erickson was red-hot from the field, going 7-for-11, 12-for-12 from the free throw line, and added two threes. Two other Bobcats reached double digit-scoring, with Calvin Ento and Nick Dissly finishing with 10.
The Bobcats out-rebounded the Ukraine, 35-31, in addition to holding their opponents to 47.1 percent from the field.
Evgen Podorvannyy led the Ukraine with 22 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. Ivan Gilevich added 16 points.
Montana State begins its regular season when they face Quinnipiac at Miami on Friday, Nov. 21 in Florida International’s Tournament.
