BOZEMAN, Montana – The Montana State women's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season in exhibition with a win over Strakonice 88-58 at Worthington Arena. Four Bobcats scored in double figures led by guards Jaimey Tanner and Sheila Hutchison with 16 points a piece. Senior Belinda Stubbs scored 10 points while Jana Smith finished with 11 points.
Tanner set the tone with Montana State’s first points of the game. From the opening the Bobcats never gave up its lead. Montana State went on a 3-0 run in the first minute of play before Strakonice scored their first point of the game on a 3 point shot at 19:01.
The half ended with Montana State in the lead 57-32 and shooting 61.8 percent (21-34) from the field. In the first half, Tanner went 4-of-5 on field goals, all on three-point attempts and a free throw for 13 points. Hutchison made good on five field goals and a perfect two for two in three point range for 14 points in the first half.
The Bobcats continued to dominate in the second half. Freshman Alyssa Nelson, competing in her collegiate debut, came out strong following halftime. After a scoring 3 points in the first half, Nelson tallied four field goals and one three pointer for nine total points by the game's end. Kati Burrows and Hillary Scott also kicked it up in the second half, finishing with 8 points.
Scoring in double figures were Tanner (16), Hutchison (16), Smith (11) and Stubbs (10). Strakonice was led by Vendula MacKova who finished with 26 points for the night and 8 rebounds. The Bobcats shot 47.1 percent on field goals compared to Strakonice 31.7 percent and tied in total rebounds 42-42.
