'Cats Win Exhibition Opener

Jason Erickson scored 20 points and his backcourt running mate Frank Brown added 10 to pace Montana State to an 88-67 exhibition opening win over Simon Fraser on Monday.
"We feel that (the team's guard play) is one of our strengths," said MSU coach Mick Durham. "We wanted to try to rotate guys around those two, and Frank and Jason were outstanding."
Erickson, a senior, added seven assists and four steals, while fellow seniors Calvin Ento and Danny Faaborg each chipped in 14 points. Josh Barsh, also a senior, added eight points. Durham was pleased with the play of his veterans. "We are only as good as those four seniors," he said. "I thought those guys showed leadership and experience."
The teams played on even terms until about seven minutes into the game, when two baskets by Erickson and a three-pointer by Dennis Woodall gave the 'Cats a lead they wouldn't relinquish. MSU pushed its lead to 13 on consecutive baskets by Morales and one each by Brown and Ento. The Clan got no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Durham saw several factors to be pleased with Monday. "A lot of guys brought some different things tonight," he said. "I liked the energy a lot of different guys brought."
Montana State plays its final exhibition against a Ukrainian team on Friday at 7:05 pm.
