Malyurek Notches Career-High to Pace Montana State Spikers

Montana State sophomore Meggie Malyurek recorded a career-high 24 kills to lift the Bobcats to a 25-30, 30-21, 30-24, 30-21 victory over Northern Arizona, Saturday night in MSU’s final home match of the season.
“It’s a pretty simple game if you can serve-receive,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “If our setter can get the ball it makes all the difference in the world. Kamber (Kelly) did a great job spreading the offense. We had four kids in double-figure kills and four hitting .280 or better. That’s getting it done.”
Montana State (15-8, 6-5) dropped the first game as NAU out-hit the Bobcats .327 to .186. In the second stanza, the Bobcats broke away from a 12-all tie to take a 17-14 advantage following a Nadine Goldi kill. MSU won the game on a LeAnn Kinvig and Megan Zanto block.
“After dropping the first game we were dragging a little bit; however, with Kamber’s hustle play, it changed the momentum of the match,” Malauulu said referring to Kamber Kelly’s dive into the scorer’s table to save a point. “We really picked up our play following that point.”
MSU jumped out early in the third game taking a 16-9 lead on a Malyurek kill. Northern Arizona (11-12, 5-5) answered to close to within 16-14. The Bobcats responded with an 8-2 run and won the game on a Kelly kill.
In the final set, Montana State staked a 17-10 lead on an Angela Wiebe kill and closed out the match on another Wiebe winner.
Also in double-digit kills for the Bobcats were Kinvig 13, Zanto 11 and Wiebe ten. Wiebe, a freshman from Winnipeg, Canada, tallied a match-high eight blocks. Kinvig also tallied eight blocks, as well. Kelly dished out dished out a season-high 54 assists.
Four Bobcats reached double-figure dig totals, including Kinvig 15, Natalie Paredes 13, Malyurek 12 and Kelly ten.
Northern Arizona was paced in the loss by Ellie Butterfield and Megan Van Anda with 19 and 17 kills, respectively.
The Bobcats will face Rocky Mountain at Billings Skyview High School on Tuesday, before facing Montana in Missoula on Friday night.
