Bobcat Men Place Third, Women Fourth at Big Sky Cross Country Championships

Gibson covered the 8000-meter course in 26:13, while Clary finished in 26:16. For their efforts, both Gibson and Clary garnered All-Big Sky Conference honors. Also finishing for the Bobcats were Brett Winegar, 21st, 27:29; Josh Ricardi, 22nd, 27:29; Tony Bachmann, 23rd, 27:33; Nick Green, 25th, 27:45; and Caleb Ambrose, 34th, 28:14.
Northern Arizona, who won the men’s team title, was led by individual medalist Travis Laird in a time of 25:24. The Lumberjacks tallied 25 points, followed by Weber State 62, MSU 75, Montana 106, Idaho State 122, Eastern Washington 163, Portland State 167, and Sacramento State 235.
“We had an outstanding race and a number of our kids really had the races of their careers,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “(Jonathan) Gibson and (Kevin) Clary really set the tone for us, while Brett Winegar, Josh Ricardi and Nick Green had outstanding days.
“We’ll use this race as a springboard to the NCAA Mountain Region meet in a couple of weeks,” Kennedy said. “We still have a lot to accomplish this season.”
Senior Ariana Lee finished fourth overall, covering the 5000-meter women’s race in a time of 17:37 to claim her second consecutive All-Big Sky Conference honor. Teammate Mayra Morgado also earned all-league kudos finishing ninth overall in a time of 18:14.
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack were Brooke Cantu, 23rd, 19:04; Sierra Kuethe, 24th, 19:04; Christin Drake, 35th, 19:23; Ellen Swogger, 36th, 19:23; and Courtney Hugstad-Vaa, 41st, 19:38.
NAU won the women’s title with 29 points, followed by Weber State 46, Montana 83, MSU 95, Eastern Washington 135, Portland State 151, Idaho State 172, and Sacramento State 245. Northern Arizona’s Ida Nilsson won the women’s event in a time of 16:46.
“Ariana Lee and Mayra Morgado both had excellent races,” Kennedy said. “I was very happy with the whole team. They kids have really improved with each race, and we’ll wait and see what lies ahead of them at the Mountain Region championship.”
MSU will compete in the NCAA Mountain Region meet, Nov. 15 in Ogden, Utah.
